Scholars Week 2020 Keynote Speaker
Adriana Gallardo
The Scholars Week Committee is excited to announce Adriana Gallardo, award-winning engagement reporter at Propublica, as the 2020 Keynote Speaker for Scholars Week 2020.
Gallardo plans to give two presentations:
On Difficult Conversations
Community Talk — Monday, May 11 @ 7 p.m., AW 204
In 2017, Adriana Gallardo returned to the Mexican-American border for a reporting trip. As a journalist, Gallardo’s best work depends on people reliving difficult moments and painful experiences for others to hear. Unintentionally returning to where she had crossed as an undocumented child, the journalist considered hard questions that could complete or complicate her family’s story, and what we do to ourselves and others by asking questions.
Experts of Harm
Banquet Keynote — Tuesday, May 12*
Adriana Gallardo shares lessons learned from two ambitious journalism projects about women experiencing irreversible trauma. Journalists, along with others who do field work, rely on communities’ willingness to share their experiences. In two case studies, Gallardo offers a process for field work that collaborates with those communities, considers solutions to complex problems, and produces deeper, more complete accounts.
*A highlight of Scholars Week is the Scholars Week Banquet featuring Adriana Gallardo as the keynote speaker. Banquet invitations will be extended to those who registered for Scholars Week’s participation by April 10. As seating is limited, an RSVP is required in order to receive a ticket to attend. As opportunity to RSVP will close May 1, or when seating capacity is met, early response is encouraged.
