About Us

Rebecca Beardsall 7The Way We Were….

In the 1980s, local teacher Clayton Ham brought the then Seattle-based Marine Science Society to Poulsbo. It was housed at Liberty Bay Marina. In 1990, it moved to its present location in the new building built with a City and County Bond Issue.

The Center was closed briefly in 2005. The board, led by Bruce Harlow, Bill Austin and a team of dedicated supporters, reinvigorated the location in 2007 and instituted the current day marine science education programs for elementary aged children.

Who We Are Today….

On May 24, 2016, we celebrated our new name (SEA Discovery Center) and the official transfer of the Poulsbo Marine Science Center to Western Washington University. In 2013, Western Washington University established the WWU Center at Olympic College, Poulsbo as a way to serve the community and businesses on the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas. In a continuation of Western’s commitment to provide for the educational needs to learners of all ages, it partnered with the City of Poulsbo to continue the mission of supporting marine education at the Poulsbo waterfront.
