Three peer reviewed publications have resulted from SMOCS projects.

During Jen Stiles’ poster presentation at the North American Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry conference, she was invited to submit a Learned Discourse on her project.  With the help of Dr. Sofield, she published in 2013.

Ben Maki and Scott Ford (with co-authors Kathryn Hodges and Ruth Sofield) published a paper in Environmental Science and Pollution Research in 2017.  The research details Ben’s senior thesis work which focused on the impacts of iron oxyhydroxides, earthworms and plants on the bioavailability, fate, and transport of arsenic and iron in soil environments.

Ethan Brown and 6 SMOCS co-authors (all undergraduates) have a paper accepted in Environmental Science and Pollution Research with an anticipated publication date in 2020.  This work formed the theses of several students and involved help from many other students.  The research focused on passive samplers used for metals in freshwater systems.

Many of the SMOCS science projects have been presented as posters or oral presentations at regional and national meetings.  Some examples are:

  • Aiken, M., Sofield RM. 2016. Sediment Quality Triad Analysis at a Model Toxics Control Act Site in Anacortes, Washington. Pacific Northwest SETAC Annual Meeting, Bellingham, WA. (Second place for Best Undergraduate Student Poster)
  • Maki B., Ford S., Sofield RM. 2016. Arsenic Mobility and Bioavailability in Washington State Soils: An Investigation into the Influence of Hydrous Ferric Oxide, Earthworms, and the Arsenic Hyper -Tolerant Brassica juncea on the Fate of Arsenic in Soils. Pacific Northwest SETAC Annual Meeting, Bellingham, WA. (First place for Best Undergraduate Oral Presentation)
  • Guddal TG, Bellefeuille B, Sarhan RS, and Sofield RM. 2015. An Assessment of the Long-term Efficacy of Activated Carbon When Ingested By Marine Worms. Pacific Northwest SETAC Annual Meeting, Portland, OR. Interactive poster session.
