Throughout the years, undergraduate students in the SMOCS class have discovered communities where toxic contamination — legacies from their industrial past — has been removed through Washington State’s Model Toxics Control Act of 1991. They have visited these communities and produced short documentary films that not only explain the cleanup, but show how the community changed through the process. See short documentaries about these communities on our Case Studies Page.
Other students have delved into particular approaches to cleanup, the techniques and strategies scientists, regulators and communities select to transform toxic sites into clean, reclaimed space. To learn more about the science and engineering behind contaminated site cleanup, visit the Approaches Page.
