The STEAM LAB is a new collaborative space supported by the Department of Art and Art History and the Student Technology Fund. This spring we will open up our Sculpture classroom, AA152, offering both digital and analog fabrication tools to qualified students. The STEAM Center is run by Sasha Petrenko, Associate Professor of Sculpture and Expanded Media, and student staff dedicated to sharing skills and ideas to foster a more collaborative, inclusive and sustainable experience for all Western students and community members.

Powermatic drill press
Assortment of Port Cable powertools
2 standard Brother Sewing machines
To gain access to the Art Annex STEAM Center, there’s a 3 step process that begins by registering HERE.
Online and in-person training is required.The STEAM Center tools are available by reservation only, limit 10 students at any one time.
In Fall 2023 we will be adding the following tools:
Shop Bot Buddy CNC
Juki Industrial Sewing Machine
Jet Wood Lathe
The Art Dept. Wood Shop is available for general use
with the following restrictions:
- Only students enrolled in the STEAM Center who have completed Wood Shop orientation or successfully taken ART331 may use the wood shop during STEAM Center hours, by reservation only, 3 hours max per day.
- Wood shop use requires a quarterly membership fee which goes toward purchasing consumables and maintaining tools and equipment. Quarterly fees are $60.00.
- THE METAL SHOP IS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR GENERAL USE.
