Internet Sources for Students: Interactive and Educational

Site Name: Kids Health

  • Reason For Choosing this Site:

    • After exploring many websites for kids about physical activity, this one was the best suited for 3rd graders. This site is the best to utilize for physical activity for 3rd graders because it is easy to navigate and it has lots of good resources and information. Students can take control of their own learning or they can be guided by their teacher. This website can be navigated easily and the information is in English as well as Spanish. The “Staying Healthy” tab will lead students to articles related to physical activity and from there they can choose which one they would like to explore. The articles can also be read to the students. A good example is, Five Reasons Girls Should Play Sports. This article is great for young girls exploring different ways to be physically active. There are also videos to watch and quizzes that students can take as well as a dictionary of medical words for kids. One good video for students to watch is this one about maintaining a healthy weight and staying active. This website can be used to give a specific article for the students to read or video for students to watch, followed by questions or group/class discussions. It can also be given for students to explore in their free time as there are many tabs that go beyond just learning about physical activity.

  • Core Integration:

    • This website could be incorporated into the classroom after a basic lesson on physical activity. This could be used to point to more of the specific topics that students might be more interested in. Either they can choose a topic of their interest, like yoga and work in groups to complete an assignment, or a specific article could be assigned to read, like this one about taking the pressure off sports competitions. For example, some students may be interested in exercising more and want to learn more about why that is a good idea and how to stay safe and healthy while doing it.

    • Through browsing many sites regarding physical health, I found this site to be the most informative for teachers. I found this site to be a great resource for teachers who may have difficulty incorporating physical activity into their day-to-day lesson plans. This site has many lessons varying from acting out animals in a children’s book, to simple physical workouts before a lesson may start. Another great thing about this website is that it provides videos of students doing the different exercises in the lessons. This provides visual evidence of the activities students may be able to follow along with. This website also provides the teacher with the different types of standards. Depending on what they’re focusing on, they may choose their specific standard and the website provides lessons that correspond and satisfy those specific standards.  Not only is this site a great source of various lesson plans, but also it is easy to navigate. • Core Integration:
    • This website can be incorporated into the classroom by the teacher using specific lesson plans that incorporate physical activity into the lesson. For example one of the lessons that can be incorporated into the classroom would be regarding story time. This lesson involves the teacher picking out a book that has animals in which the students can act out, instead of the teacher just reading the material. Another lesson example would be for the third grade. In this lesson, students follow along with their teacher as they are instructed through a plethora of movements and stretches that target the whole body. Each of the movements corresponds to the beat or rhythm of the music. This lesson is great for cognitive and psychomotor skills. This lesson would fall under NHES 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.

Internet Source for Parents: Informative and Resourceful

Site Name: Center for Disease Control and Prevention: Youth Physical Activity

  • Reason For Choosing this Site:

      • I think the CDC website is the BEST website for parents to learn and teach their children about the importance of daily physical activity because the website is loaded with information. It is organized so that information is easy to access and appealing for the eyes. This website contains lots of statistics about the common amount of physical activity per day for kids, consequences for a lack of physical activity during youth, and recommendations for the types of activities children should be doing and why. My favorite parts was the included toolkits to help parents get their children more physical active with ideas of games and activities. There were also some expectations of what children should be getting for physical activity during school hours, so that could be helpful for parents to know what their kids are already doing throughout the day.

  • Core Integration:

    • I would integrate this into my classroom by sharing this information and website with my parents. I could inform them by using a newsletter, or a classroom blog website. I would highlight the information I found most useful or interesting, and share how important I think physical health is for children and the importance of promoting it inside their families. I would also express the influence that parents’ choices about their health and how they affect their children’s future lifestyle.
