For our literacy collage we decided to largely focus on the contrast of our narratives but also highlight the connecting elements of it in the middle of our visual. Our narratives were vastly different from one another. Griffins narrative outlined the time he rightfully guessed how to pronounce the word pterodactyl. Alison described how she used a gratitude journal to overcome a hard and stressful time in her life. For the main element of our project, we chose to focus on the yin yang symbol. It shows the differences but also highlights the balance of the two. We each used a side of the symbol to display our narratives and used the line in the middle of the symbol to show the things our narratives had in common, such as the feeling of happiness and reading/writing displayed in with smiley faces and books. Griffins side has a picture of a pterodactyl, which was the word he rightfully guessed. Alison’s side has a notebook to represent the gratitude journaling she did. We also decided to keep our collage simple and focus on only the most important aspects. We used contrast in the black and white background, repetition in the symbols along the border, and alignment in the yin yang symbols along with the placement of our additional symbols. Overall, our visual combines the unique and similar aspects of each narrative to create a cohesive literacy collage.
