Optional Extension Project

As an optional extension project, I chose to read Supersonic Girl by Sandra Diez. I chose this comic from the most popular of the superhero section. I chose to read from the superhero section of webtoons because, although I have never read or been super into comics growing up, when I thought about comics, superhero’s are what came to my mind. The comic supersonic girl follows a teen through her journey of balancing being a normal student and a superhero at the same time. Throughout the first few episodes I was able to notice the detailed art that went into this entire series, but there was one episode in particular that caught my eye. Through this Webtoons episode of supersonic-girl there is a variety of literacy used to help enhance this comic as a whole. Episode 6 includes a musical aspect that adds a different element to this genre. The music is played during a very important fight scene and adds an intensity to the piece. This music is added to enhance and give a further understanding to the audience. The music is a big piece, because for the first page of episodes it is the only one containing music. Along with the music in episode 6 the author also incorporates a few writing techniques and designs that help the piece to stand out and help the audience to gain a better understanding. For example in a conversation between the main character, supersonic-girl, and her uncle, the artist wanted to show that the supersonic-girl was interrupting her uncle, and she did this by using a visual effect of drawing two speech bubbles but then covering the uncles with supersonic girls remark. I had never seen this technique before, and it caught my eye.

Throughout the entire series the importance of color and shading really stood out to me. The author highlighted the big scenes with bright bold colors and used darker shades or shadows to portray a more gloomy or scary mood. For example whenever there was a fight scene, the backgrounds were always orange or yellow, and really stood out by itself with no words. These fight scenes were meant to stand out on their own, and this is demonstrated with the use of bright colors and no words. The author also incorporated dark colors to demonstrate a harsher mood. For example at the end of episode one, when the villains are introduced, the background is very dark and shaded and even the speech box is grey. This added detail of color helps to enhance the audiences understanding in a way that I did not realizer before. Every detail helps and is there for a reason.

Through this process of looking into a different genre, I discovered a lot of new information. Although I went into this project not really expecting to enjoy reading comics, I was proven wrong. These comics were very entertaining, and it is clear that a lot of time and detail goes into them. Everything such as the coloring, the music, and the little details hidden in the text matter. Because there are not as many words on the page, the audience is having to interact with the pictures and the small details much more. I found this process to be very fun, and it was exciting to see the elements of CRAP incorporated into these comics.
