What I noticed while studying the visual rhetoric around Western’s campus is the large amount of nature that encompasses the campus. I believe that Western does this intentionally and it works to draw in a select group of people that go to school here. For example, one of our buildings here, Miller Hall, has a building inside of the building with plants and open air surrounding the inner one. You can see the multi-layered building in the picture following this paragraph. In there you can see little shrubs, rocks, and even trees.  

Western is also known for having the most outdoor sculptures in the whole state of Washington. Among these sculptures are some of nature images for instance this owl that sits outside of Sigma on the Ridgeway dorms. Even though Western has lots of real nature on campus it seems like they try to make it even more so by putting up sculptures of animals in nature.

Another theme within the theme that Western has of nature is being eco friendly. On campus there are many different types of waste bins, signs reminding not to dump down drains, as well as numerous bike racks. Western does a great job of trying to be as eco friendly as possible in the way that students are supposed to sort their garbage from their dorm and other systems set up around campus. Not only do they actually take strides to be eco friendly but you can see it around campus even if you don’t go here.

Below is a picture of the rose garden that is in front of Old Main and a trail next to the biology building. While both are beautiful they are not necessary things or things that would probably exist on a normal college campus. They show the extra effort Western puts in to their campus to appeal to a select audience of students. Because of these extra efforts Western draws in lots of students from other states and students in state that are hippie outdoor loving people.
