Reading Lumine from the site was an interesting experience to say the least. The genre of literacy I usually consume would be more of the novel / book category so to go from that to something akin to a manga took me back to my middle school years almost. However, this genre definitely presented media in a new light I hadn’t really thought about. Being able to physically see the emotions of the characters and being able to interact with them beyond what your mind’s eye could see was an interesting and welcome change. The author has direct control over what she wants to express in her characters and the ability to directly influence what their physical appearance is. I know in the past when I’ve read popular novels, I have seen public outrage about fanart of characters. Most times, some of the fans of the genre have taken POC characters and essentially white washed them by drawing them with paler skin or leaving out some of their ethnic features that were stated to be prominent in the books. It’s nice to see a genre where a problem like that doesn’t seem to be at the forefront of discussion.
Another thing that differs in this genre is the ability to customize your Webtoon in different ways. There were a couple of chapters that asked the reader to turn on their sound. The author had laid a score over the text and it changed the feeling of the chapter. Rather than being a passive observer, the audience reading the Webtoon was allowed to interact more with the text by hearing what the author was trying to express. It’s an interesting change from my normal passive reading and allowed me to engage more with the Webtoon.
In the past I have read a few different genres of graphic novels, manga and the Webtoon reminds me of them a great deal. But it differs structurally. The author of the Webtoon I read, Emma Krogell, has long chapters that don’t follow the typical page format of a graphic novel or manga; they’re longer in length and to read the whole ‘chapter’ you have to scroll constantly. But this genre also allows the author a lot of leniency when it comes to being able to interact with her audience. I consider myself lucky because I had the ability to binge the entire series and this author states in her bio that she updates every Sunday. There were a couple of times that she had posted, instead of chapters, notes to her audience explaining that she was sick or just didn’t have enough time to finish the chapter that week. This genre allowed her the ability to interact more with her audience and keep them updated on her life as well as the Webtoon.
All and all, it’s interesting to have the ability to interact with literacy as unique as this one. If I didn’t have a computer or have access to the internet, I would have never know this even existed. It presents a good story with well developed and thought out characters that I enjoyed getting to know better, even if it was a cheesy story about werewolves.
