Part I – Dystopian Dreams
“Whenever we try to envision a world without war, without violence, without prisons, without capitalism, we are engaging in speculative fiction. All organizing is science fiction. Organizers and activists dedicate their lives to creating and envisioning another world, or many other worlds – so what better venue for organizers to explore their work than science fiction stories?”
This is how Walidah Imarisha, co-editor of Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements, begins her introduction to this compelling collection – which in turn has inspired the 2018-2019 Western Read’s film series, Octavia’s Cinema: The Science Fiction of Film. Each quarter’s screenings will touch on a set of intersectional themes that reflect the visionary elements of these stories, with post-film discussions that will allow the viewer to expand their mind even further into the speculative realms at hand. And we will endeavor to keep the wisdom Octavia Butler in our hearts and minds at each step of the way, remembering above all that our “destiny is to take root among the stars.”
Please join us on these visionary quests into the expansive and speculative worlds of sci-fi film!
