President Randhawa provided testimony in support of Senate Bill 5830 yesterday in the Senate Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee. If funded and signed into law, SB 5830 would increase tenure-track faculty positions at Western and other public 4-year institutions across the state.
“Research suggests that access to tenure-line faculty, who have the expertise, time and resources needed to advise and mentor students, increases student engagement, persistence and graduation,” President Randhawa told legislators today. “This is especially true for low-income students, students of color, and first-generation students.”
The legislation would also establish faculty diversity programs similar to WWU’s Diversity and Inclusion Hiring Initiative across the state’s public universities.
