Interpreting Stadium Piece, by Bruce Nauman

Take the Journey

This Journey is a Microsoft Windows experience (sorry Mac users)

Bruce Nauman’s iconic sculpture, Stadium Piece, is a unique piece of Western’s outdoor sculpture art. It’s uniqueness lies not only in its form but in its relation to campus culture. The piece is inherently interactive, meant to be experienced up close, on top of and from underneath. For our creative response to Stadium Piece, we felt it should mirror these qualities.

To achieve this, we decided to make a ‘choose your own’ adventure to take the viewer on a journey through the artist’s creative process in making the sculpture. The viewer will face design element choices, such as whether to put the sculpture indoors or outdoors and what materials to use. Each step throughout the experience represents a pivotal decision point in the aesthetics of the sculpture and Nauman’s intent. Depending on what choices the viewer makes, we have devised interpretive alternates to Stadium Piece to provide a more dynamic reaction to the sculpture that currently exists on campus.
