Presentation: Exploring AI in Higher Education

As we journey through the landscape of AI in education, it’s important to recognize that, much like any hike here in the Pacific Northwest, some trails are meant to be challenging. Many hikers can agree, it is the hardest trails that are the most rewarding, and where they feel growth. The same can be said with higher education. Although for educators, AI has felt more like a wildfire, the technology itself has automated things to provide many of us ways for faster, easier, and a more frictionless interface to taskts. While this ease brings efficiency, in education, it is the friction in learning or on a good hike that is essential for growth. Just as a steep trail builds strength, the challenges in learning—those moments of struggle and reflection—are what foster deep understanding, knowledge, and critical thinking.

Upcoming Presentation / Workshop for WWU HHS retreat

This workshop is an expedition into artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on the educational landscape. Led by instructional designer AJ Barse, in the next hour and a half, we’ll be exploring the integration of AI within teaching practices, examining how students may be utilizing AI tools (knowingly or unknowingly, and highlighting the latest advancements at Western Washington University.

Participants will engage with key issues such as personalized learning, ethical considerations, and the implications of AI on academic integrity, all while aligning with Washington State mandates and university policies. Along the way, we’ll address challenges like personalized learning and ethical considerations, review the Washington State guidelines for state employees and university policies on AI.

Whether you’re feeling lost or ready to explore, this workshop will help you chart new paths and transform your classroom.
