8*F at Palouse Falls

Next in the Winter is Coming photo series; 8* F at Palouse Falls.

Palouse Falls is probably on of Washington’s most popular waterfalls. In the spring, it is lined with flowers and a popular photography subject by any photographer.  I wanted to go after this falls- in the dead of winter. It is not a common winters scape for the PNW, so I thought it would be a perfect moment  to capture.

This photo was literally captured at around 8*F.  I had to work fast, not just because even with gloves it is freezing, but even with 5 batteries oh hand I was not going to have a lot of time to shoot. DSLR and Mirrorless cameras alike have one problem in common with batteries; below operating temperatures exhaust them rapidly. In the case of Sony mirrorless it is especially difficult as the battery capacity is about 450 shots per battery.

I had about 8 min of shooting between 5 batteries!

A pro-photo tip: when shooting in freezing temperatures, keep a disposable hand warmer in your bag with your batteries. This can help stay off rapid battery exhaustion.

This moment would not have happened without Patreon supporters!

UPDATE:

8* at Palouse Falls has been selected by WSPF as this week’s photo of the week!
