“Industrial Laundry” is my soundscape project involving sounds from my washing machine on a wash cycle. It is obnoxiously loud in my apartment and frequently sounds like a helicopter or train. I captured its sounds by pacing past it several times. You can notice in the audio that it gets louder as I walk by. The laundry machine creates a low whirring noise while shakes and rumbles are also audible. The industrial sounds are ominous and unpromising (although clean laundry is usually promised). The washing machine noises remind me of a scene in the 1979 Soviet film, Stalker, which depicts the main character lying in bed wide awake. The sounds from a passing train increasingly get louder as things in the bedroom shake and rattle. The scene is quite long and mysterious, similar to the sounds of my lovely washing machine.
