The Great Salt lake shrunk to historic lows in 2021, and scientist predict that it could be completely gone in the next five years. Brine shrimp thrive in the high salinity of the terminal lake, and serve as the backbone of the ecosystem, with many migratory birds relying on them for food. As the lake shrinks, the salinity of the water increases to the point that brine shrimp can no longer survive. This has disastrous consequences for birds, and the local economy, which profits off of the brine shrimp eggs. Better water resource management and climate mitigation are needed to preserve the Great Salt Lake, and fend off the looming environmental disaster.
