My topic for this week was postpartum depression. For this drawing, I made a gold female body with a gaping hole in the torso. I purposefully left the arms and head off of this body because many mothers who suffer with PPD often feel like their heads are lost in a fog and they’re unable to help themselves or their child. The gaping hole also represents how some mothers feel lost and afraid now that their child has been born, showing the deep-seated feeling we all get where our stomachs drop. I also wanted to do my best interpretation of a curvy/plus sized body to show the physical changes a mother goes through during pregnancy. These physical changes and the weight gain also usually have many negative impacts on the mother’s mental health and body image. Thus why I wanted to have the body be made of gold in hopes of bringing value back to a body shape that is normally devalued and ostracized by society.

Yes, childbirth greatly affects a woman, both physically and mentally. As a mother, I can say that this is a complete transformation. Fortunately, you can fix a lot of things or just help yourself. For example, I had diastasis, my stomach sagged for a long time, the symptoms were obvious. I began to exercise regularly using a special system of exercises and a month later I already observed the first improvements. And for the mental “hole” I advise you to pay attention to your hormones.
