My hearing loss is a big part of my identity. I wanted to represent my perception of my identity through the Japanese concept of “kintsugi”, which is the art of repairing broken pottery with gold. Using photo editing, I drew gold lines around the cracks of the old vase and around my hearing aids to show how my perception of self has changed over time to view myself as a beautiful work of art, rather than broken. The old vase and the modern hearing aids also represent how the generations of family before me have shaped me into who I am today.
