For this piece, I wanted to explore ways in which I present myself within the world’s ideas of femininity. Fish and the portrayal of the female figure don’t often mix in old, romantic art pieces but I hold such a deep and meaningful connection with fish and everything aquatic. The ocean has provided for me and my family’s wellbeing since before I could remember. She is what I have in mind when I’m prompted to respond to someone asking me questions pertaining to my self image — blood, salt water, gills, piercing eyes, and wet hair. This piece is meant to not only showcase how I see myself but to challenge ideas (including my own) of femininity, especially in such a turbulent and ever changing environment.
