Growing up biracial being “exotic” was often tied to my beauty. Most often older men, or occasionally peers at school would use the word exotic as if it were a compliment. A word that has been used to sexualize, and other racially ambiguous women throughout history. Thus creating the belief that my beauty was linked to being foreign, and untouchable. In this photo collage, my body is painted in “exotic” plant leaves, and pasted three times over a photo of leaves in a rainforest. The leaves covering my body, smearing on my face and stomach allude to the over sexualization and othering of racially ambiguous women, and how that can consume one from the day they hit puberty.
