For my Project Now assignment, I focused on the recent discovery of the 215 bodies buried behind Hinds County Penal Farm. 215 graves were marked only by a metal tag labeled with a number and all bodies belonged to either homeless people or unclaimed inmates from local jails who died. I wanted to make a little tribute to all the names that were discovered at the burial site and people who are not receiving the justice they deserve in a burial. Even if they were inmates, they are still someone’s child and their deaths deserve a little more than a metal stake in the ground with a randomly assigned number. Using an official list, I hand wrote all 215 names down. This piece is meant to represent every life lost and to portray their
careless burial with the jagged ends of the ripped-up paper
