The collage I made is all the women represented from two magazines. I chose one very average, name-brand, cheap magazine and one more luxury and high-end magazine. I cut each woman out to see if there was a pattern in the media we consume. My conclusion was yes, there is a pattern. The women in the cheaper magazine were all White, had blond hair, and were skinny. These magazines are more accessible to the public and are likely viewed by a larger audience. It was disappointing to see that the representation of diversity was so low. It sets unrealistic and degrading standards for women. In the more expensive magazine, there was more racial diversity with a large amount of Asian and Black models and a few White models. It was nice to see this in that magazine. But there was still not one person who was considered anything other than very thin. I hope that in the future there will be more racial diversity but also include many different types of bodies. Only showing skinny White bodies feels like an advertisement saying that’s what the world prefers… I want that not to be true. My piece of work only shows the media of magazines but I believe the trends found apply to other forms of media as well.

Beauty is not only external attractiveness, but also the inner world of a person. It manifests itself in our actions, words and attitude to the world around us. True beauty comes from within, filling life with harmony and inspiration.
