My work highlights the often-ignored barriers immigrants face to integration in the United States. I intended to do this by satirizing the common phrase “pull yourself up by your bootstraps.” In the painting, an individual is pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, but a price tag featuring the American flag is attached to the lining. I wanted this piece to inspire viewers to question what barriers they have either witnessed, experienced, or heard of.
