Sydney D, Digital Artist: The goal of my artwork is to bring attention to gun violence in the United States, specifically how gun violence is not “new” or “sudden,” but rather violence that has become embedded in American history. This was inspired – in part – by the near assassination of a political figure in the United States. More specifically, the simultaneous discourse of (anti) gun control and how violence has no place in America. I hope that when the viewer looks at the piece they are prompted to think about what kind of violence is acceptable in the United States, what kind of action or inaction is acceptable in relation to violence in America, and if violence truly has no place in the United States, what concrete ways can that violence can be prevented. To initiate these thoughts, I used the dates of mass shootings in America ranging from January 16, 1900, to July 13, 2024, to create an incomplete American flag. My hope is that it will remain incomplete.
