TOPIC:
For my topic of discussion, I wanted to try to bring attention to the fact animals are still evolving. While there are some amazing evolutions going on, there are some sad ones that are coming as a result of direct human intervention.
I also wanted to bring attention to it because a lot of people tend to tell me how they still think of animals as less than capable. That they are stuck in being what we use to be- that they are stupid or cant learn and arent worthy of being treated as living. I have had past friends whom would use this to justify the reason they would abandon/abuse animals because they dont matter. They arent worth anything.

For this reason, I focused my project on evolution of animals that is currently something happening right now before our very eyes. Animals are adapting to the changes in the world that we as humans bring. From global warning adaptiveness to adapting to living alongside humans, and some even fully within their own worlds that we are only just now discovering.

Rationale:

  • Why does this topic interest you? Why this topic interests me is because I have a lot of love for animals, what started as an obsession as a child turned into being an activist for animal rights. I grew up in a home where my mother got a new dog every week. and She would solve the problems of the dog in different ways each time. I swore as an adult I would never put an animal through what my mother did, yet I still hold onto those names of those animals feeling guilty I couldnt do much else for them.
  •  What do you hope achieve for you/the viewer by making this work? My objective for making this work is I want to show to people what our impact on animals is doing. A lot of people still feel so distant to the problems that we cause or the ways in which we impact the world every day in our every day lives. I want to open peoples eyes and tell them these issues arent so distant.
  •  How can your project align with current art discourses-art that creates dialogue?  A rational IS NOT “Because I like it,” “Because I don’t like it,” “Because it’s fun/cute/clever” or “Because someone is questioning it” A rational typically resolves the following questions:
  • What is the goal of this project? – To open peoples eyes to the reality of impact on the world around us.
  • What is the message you want to communicate? – That animals are indeed evolving either by forced evolution or by the impact humans have made on the planet we live on.
  • Who are you trying to communicate with? – The general public, its hard to tell who is and isnt an animal abuser, whats important is not to point fingers for blame but to open their eyes for them to make the change.
  • How does your proposed solution help achieve the project goal, send the desired message, and reach the desired audience? – I am hoping it can make an impact on peoples views of the animals we share the earth with. I still hear a lot of people wanting to push bears out of range of small towns or cities even though their environment is being encroached on and they dont have any other choice but to live alongside us.

Project proposal/Materials

I wanted to make a few sculptures and paper collage’s to represent how animals have handed their identities to humans in order to survive over all.
I have construction paper, scissors, glue, and clay. I was going to combine these to represent a sculpture of animals and their evolutions and handing them to humans as a way to survive. Almost like their tax for living on the world that we have decided to rule.
