On August 8, 1970, five orcas, including the famous Tokitae, were seized in Penn Cove, near Whidbey Island Washington. They were caught to be put in captivity, and three drowned during the capture. The pod of southern resident orcas they were taken from, the L- Pod, had not been seen in Penn Cove since. The week of November 7, they returned to Penn Cove for the first time in 50 years. They appeared to be exploring. The oldest living orca of the pod is also it’s matriarch. She is 96 years old, old enough to remember the tragedy that took place, and yet she still led her family back. Their presence in Penn Cove feels like a call to action, especially given the state of the world we live in currently. A call telling us that we need to take up space and be heard, keep fighting, and not give up.
