This piece, Out of Sight, Out of Mind, was created to raise awareness of Bellingham’s homelessness crisis. Unfortunately, homeless people are stigmatized and biased against daily, often painted as criminals and dehumanized. Just like these alleyways, unhoused people are overlooked and forgotten. Many factors contribute to homelessness, such as race, disability, gender, addiction, and financial struggles, to name just a few of the many reasons. Homelessness is often a byproduct of systemic issues—such as the lack of affordable housing, accessible healthcare, cost of living, and mental health support.
I originally planned on using multi-liner pens on this piece but I feared it would distract from the softness of the piece.

The work really makes you think about how much of our lives goes “out of sight” but continues to influence us on a subconscious level. The visual minimalism in this project reminded me of a recent experience of choosing furniture – I was looking for something modern and read Modloft reviews . It’s funny how ideas in art and interior design can overlap. Thanks for the inspiration – visually and conceptually very strong work!
