Recently, a Southern Resident orca mother was seen carrying around her dead calf out of grief, a mark of tragedy for both her as a mother and the Southern Resident orca group as a whole, as they continue to struggle surviving due to problems caused by humans. Here, the mother is depicted with her calf the same as was popular in the 1800s- photographs with dead loved ones as a way to preserve their memory. Perhaps by finding empathy in a shared emotion of loss, humans can work more to improve the lives of orcas.
