In response to Donald Trump’s executive order titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Returning Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” I have created a handsewn American flag with thrifted fabric in the colors of the trans pride flag. I was inspired by Joyce Weiland’s Flag Arrangement among many other appropriations/subversions of national flags in art and pop culture. My goal was to create a piece that juxtaposed women’s crafts, trans identity, and personal experience through a handmade object against America as an institution and its violence towards trans people.
