During my trip to Montgomery, Alabama right before the start of the quarter for a history capstone project I came across the statue of James Marion Sims, at the Alabama State Capitol. He was the first ever gynecologist and was known to sexually assault, and ‘treat’ without consent on black enslaved girls. The first girl he tested on was only 14 years old, her name was Anarcha and she died from blood poisoning due to malpractice. The next subject was given partial proper treatment only after 31 failed attempts leading to permanent and eventually fatal scarring wounds.

The monster is now memorialized as a savior of modern medicine. His legacy is one of death and no value for human life. He joins the ranks of Jefferson Davis and the only recently added Rosa Parks (since 2024) as the only statues displayed at the capitol building.

He deserves worse than the middle finger I can supply, but here I place this symbol of resistance against the statue.
