The event I chose to focus on for Project Now was the death of Moonbin, a member of the K-pop group Astro, who died on April 19th, 2023, by suicide. This suicide comes six years after the death of Jonghyun, a member of the K-pop group SHINee, who died by suicide on December 18th, 2017. These suicides shocked the K-pop community, yet the pressure faced by those in the Korean entertainment industry is often insurmountable, as celebrities are constantly pressured by their companies, the media, as well as fans (there is even a word in Korean, sasaeng, for fans that obsessively stalk and invade the privacy of Korean idols). In order to combat the harsh bullying that contributes to the growing pressure of the Korean entertainment industry, I chose to create a portrait of Jonghyun and Moonbin, so as to remind people the lives that were lost as a result of unnecessary hate. The text in the background, “HUMAN IDOL” and “IDOL HUMAN,” is meant to show an important shift in perspective: before they are idols that perform for their fans, celebrities are humans with their own lives and emotions.
