Abortion is illegal in Palestine. Women’s rights groups in the nation have been pressuring their government to see how this service could save the lives of thousands of women, but they have routinely refused. Furthermore, the Palestinian government blames the War in Gaza for dividing their lack of resources or time to help countless generations of women who have been victims of rape and incest – sometimes as early as fourteen years old. In some cases, a woman can be sentenced to death by her own family for being pregnant against their approval – in a system where refusing a man’s sexual advances is frowned upon. To save themselves, some undergo self-inflicted abortions in secret. As you can imagine, this is extremely traumatic to those that survive this procedure – without anesthetic.
In Israel, abortion is legal and the Israeli government takes great pride in offering this as a federally sponsored healthcare treatment. However, some organizations encourage them to carry their pregnancy to the end of their term in order to statistically replace the number of of deaths from the War in Gaza. Thus, the lives of the infants and women they claim to protect are commodified during this ongoing War. A sobering thought – of all the deaths in Gaza, most of them are women and children.
No matter the situation, the women and girls from these nations are seen as body-makers and coffin-fillers. Not human beings. They are pressured and in some cases forced by their family and country to conceive, birth, and repeat to offset the death rates.
