The issue I chose to talk about with my project is the decline of Diatom populations because of ocean acidification. Diatoms are microorganisms that make up one fifth of the earths photosynthesis and are an incredibly important part of ocean ecosystems. In my drawing I wanted to highlight the beauty of Diatoms because although they are microscopic they are important and beautiful. The die off of Diatoms is caused by too much CO2 in the atmosphere and with less diatoms, less carbon is able to be consumed by them and so it is a viscious cycle. The protection of Diatoms and prevention of ocean acidification are very important parts of protecting the climate but I think they need to be talked about more.
