(Boston marriage is a term used to describe two women in a committed, romantic relationship.) for this piece i wanted to shed light on the concept of queer relationships in a contemporary setting. false narratives about queer people have been rampant for for decades, contributing to harmful prejudices. this piece is of two women, but they are depicted in a heteronormative style, and even are clothed in gender conforming colors. so, while they are presented as a heterosexual couple, they are viewed as “wrong” due to being same sex. as a lesbian woman, representation of queer women is incredibly important to me, and the history behind lesbian iconography, fashion, and social events are something I find incredibly fascinating. i used iconic lesbian motifs like pomegranates, violets, and unicorns to aid to the sapphic iconography of my piece.
