Shortly after the start of his presidency, Trump named himself chair of the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C, one of the nation’s biggest cultural centers. In 1937, Hitler made a sweeping effort to project the style of art he approved for Germany’s image and destroyed, hid, and discouraged any art outside of this norm. Dictators such as Stalin, Franco, and Pinochet have had a similar chokehold on the arts allowed during their rule. In my shoebox gallery, I have made crude recreations of the paintings intended for Hitler’s art gallery “The Führermuseum”. Political control over the arts is something characteristic of dictators, and it is important to recognize how Donald Trump is using his power.
