Art 109: Visual Dialogue

Vincent

My project is on epilepsy. Specifically, the misconceptions surrounding the neurological condition. Many people believe the condition to just be what are known as tonic clonic (or grand mal) seizures with a sensitivity to flashing lights. In reality, only 5% of people living with epilepsy have a sensitivity to lights. Epilepsy can also be beautiful. From finding community within people living with this condition to the appreciation of life- of independence. The color for epilepsy awareness is lavender due to the color’s calming effect. Vincent Van Gogh had the condition and in his legacy was an appreciation for beauty never seen before. Epilepsy is not static in pain but rather in flux with beauty and autonomy.

THE WAY OUT (IN)

This audio is me unlocking my door and stepping out. I lock myself outside, then return inside without locking the door. What will enter?

LAVENDER / SEAHORSE / ELEVEN / VINCENT

“LAVENDER / SEAHORSE / ELEVEN / VINCENT” is a work about epilepsy. The colors to mimic brain scans. The four words hold some meaning to the neurological condition. Lavender is the color for epilepsy awareness, seahorse is the animal, eleven is epilepsy awareness month, and Vincent for Vincent Van Gogh who had the condition. I am borrowing from life.
