Examining our Data

We chose the following questions from our survey to represent the results we got: “Did you choose to attend the school?” “Was your school a closed campus?” “Do you think disruptions in classrooms cause your academic work to suffer?” “Did you feel safe in your school?” & “Did you see lots of violence withing your school?” With the results of these questions we were able to see if there is a correlation with the schools safety.private vs public graph results from survey

By looking at our data, we were unable to find a huge difference between the feeling of the students in Public and Private Schools. However, that does not mean that we did not see any relationships within our data. We found that there was a correlation within the aspects of students feeling safe in their schools and the amount of security each individual school they attended. Also, the majority of the responses confirmed that the lack of safety did in fact influence the students’ ability to focus on their reading and writing. Whether or not the school’s campus was open or closed has a correlation in whether or not a student felt safe within their school. Which is important in the overall findings because it proves a portion of our research question; Does violence and safety affect a students’ ability to focus on their writing, reading and communication.

Although we did not get to find a huge difference between the Private and Public School systems, which was a surprise to us, that information too was important to acknowledge. Many of the reasons we had chosen to use the difference of Public and Private Schools was because of the many stereotypes both of us had heard about the safety in each schooling system.

In fact, there was an article that we came across when researching about this topic, where a principle of a private school admitted that many Private Schools do not take as many safety precautions when it comes to things such as lock down drills, or security guards, because they just don’t believe that they any susceptible to things like that. So after reading this article, we created many hypotheses about what we would find after looking over all the responses from our survey.

Like we explained up above, our data did not show us what we expected, but many times that is what research does. One thing to consider when looking at our research, is that there was no age requirement, and many of these respondents were around the age of 18. Possibly making our research a little skewed because of the lack in representation of multiple generations of students and the how safety within these two different schooling systems have changed.

For both the majority of students said they do think disruptions in class cause their academic work to suffer. One thing we didn’t consider was how income plays a factor in what school they attend. 24 out of 46 students didn’t choose to attend a public school, with this information we can infer that they had no choice but to attend. As for private schools 6 put of 11 students choose to attend their school. To clear things up we could of added the questions “Did you every wish to attend a private school?” All of the students from private schools and 27 out of 46 students from public school said they felt safe in their school.
