Sleep For Kids Website

Description:

SleepForKids is a great resource for students who want to learn more about sleep. It’s a simple and easy to use interactive site that has games, puzzles worksheets, and fun facts. I would utilize this in my classroom by having my students explore the website and write down fun facts that they have learned. I think it would be a great idea to pull together the fun facts after everyone has visited the website and to make a poster that would hang up in our classroom so students, teachers and families can look at it when in the classroom. This is the best site that I found because it was something easy that students could look for when logged onto a computer at school and could be a fun thing to do in their “free time”.

Standards:

NHES 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.

  •     PHW3.2.2: Identify trusted adults and professionals in school who can help promote personal health and wellness (e.g school nurse, classroom teacher.)

NHES 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

  •     PHW5.2.3: Explain the potential positive and negative outcomes from personal health or wellness related decisions.

NHES 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.

  •     PHW8.2.1: Make requests to others to promote positive personal health and wellness practices.

Integration:

I would integrate this website into the core topic of Science even though it is possible to integrate it into any core topic (since sleep is so important for our bodies to help us learn). The way I would integrate this website into our science lesson would be to hand out the worksheet that is on the website called “Bring Out the Stars”. This is a worksheet that students fill out themselves after visiting the website. This helps students realize that sleep is important and that it can relate back to other things in life. For example, if someone were to be tired all the time or have a bad attitude or just not feel good it could be because of a lack of sleep. Sleep is so important and I feel like handing this worksheet out to students would be a good eye opener. Sleep correlates with science with how we take care of our bodies/minds.(Linked down below)

Standards for Science Integration:

ESS3.A: Natural Resources
  •      Living things need water, air, and resources from the land, and they live in places that have the things they need. Humans use natural resources for everything they do.

ETS1.C: Optimizing the Design Solution
  •      Because there is always more than one possible solution to a problem, it is useful to compare and test designs.

Internet Source for Teachers:

Sleep Resource for Teachers

Description:

This website is a great resource for teachers because it has a great lesson plan on sleep and how much sleep kids should get as well as how to come up with a bedtime routine as a family and it comes with handouts for the parents. The lesson includes many different aspects including an art activity, physical activity, and a storytime. It also talks about how getting enough sleep is just as important to children’s health as nutrition and physical activity and how not enough sleep can have negative results on your health. It is fun and interactive and is very informational for the students. My favorite part of this website is that it included a parent handout and activities to do as a family to practice healthy sleep habits.

Standards:

NHES 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.

NHES 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.

NHES 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

NHES 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.

NHES 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.

Healthy Behavior Outcomes:

HBO 2: Practice appropropriate hygiene habits.

HBO 3: Get an appropriate amount of sleep and rest.

Learning Objective:

Learn the importance of getting healthy sleep.

Integration:

I would integrate this into the classroom by doing a health day and have the school nurse come in and talk to students about health which would include healthy sleeping habits which would then lead into this health lesson. After the lesson the students would be able to go home and talk with their families about healthy sleeping habits and give them the parent handout.

Internet Source for Parents

Kids health

Description:

This website includes information for parents on why sleep problems might arise at this age. In elementary school, kids are beginning to have homework and sports and activities which may leave less time for sleeping. The website also has some tips for parents to make sure their child gets enough sleep such as having a consistent bedtime and less technology right before bed. This website also lists multiple different sleep problems a child may have and some solutions and tips. Some examples are sleepwalking and nightmares. As a teacher I would introduce this link to parents by posting it on the class website and also sending it in an email.
