Sexual Health Internet Resources for Educators

Site Name:  King County Public Health FLASH website

  • Reason for choosing this website:
    • This website has a full range of curriculum teachers could use in a classroom covering sexual health. It has a training guide for teachers, message to parents, and lesson plans for different ages of students. The ages the lesson plans cover go from 4th grade-12th grade. They also have a section specifically for students with disabilities ages 11-21. I also thought this was the best website because it had resources specific to how to answer questions, and how teachers can recognize and report sexual abuse. I would use this site to help plan my unit on sexual health.
  • The National Health Education Standard:
    • Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
    • The Healthy Behavior Outcomes:
      • HBO 1: Establish and maintain healthy relationships
      • HBO 8: Utilize appropriate health services to promote sexual health
  • Core Integration:
    • After doing the Puberty lesson for grades 4-6, you could have students work on an activity where they label different male and female body parts. They could then work on comparing and contrasting the male and female body by color coordinating different parts of the body. Doing this would integrate this puberty lesson into science and art.
    • Common Core Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.7: Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.
