Description: This documentary focuses on five different students who are being bullied in the United States. Each student has their own unique story, their ages ranging from 11 to 16 years old, each of them being bullied for different reasons. During the film, the filmmakers catch events of bullying at school and on the bus that happens to these students. Some stories are worse than others and the documentary goes into the effects that bullying has on these victims. The documentary also has a significant portion where schools are interviewed about what they do to prevent bullying and how impactful those efforts really were in those schools. There is also much discussion about bullying prevention from the parents of the five students involved in the film. and what organizations they have formed to unite our country in bullying prevention. This movie is best because it covers real life examples that happen in our country about what bullying can look like in our public schools. This documentary contains facts with regards to how many students are bullied every year in this country and the effects it has on these specific set of 5 students.

  • Before the film begins, I would ask my students to take notes on important details on one of the students in the movie for their in class essay that they would need to write after the movie is over. I would use this movie as a prompt to create an essay regarding bullying on one of the students in the film. Using the information that the film gave about the student to use as supporting evidence as to why bullying is not an okay behavior to participate in.

Length: 1h 38min

Rating: PG-13

Description & why it is BEST: This movie is about a young girl named Jenna at 13 years old who just wishes she could fit in with the ‘cool kids’ her age and wants to do anything to get there, including not being herself. Her best friend Matt gives her a toy playhouse with a bunch of wish dust on it for Jenna’s birthday. At her birthday party Jenna gets upset and wishes she was “30 flirty and thriving”. She wakes up at 30 years old finding out that she stuck with her initiative to stick with the ‘cool kids’. Over the next few days she realizes that these ‘cool kids’ were not fulfilling her, treated her with disrespect, and actually made her a worse of a person. Jenna finds the toy playhouse that Matt made for her and wishes to go back. Once she returns she makes the decisions to be and live for herself and to not give in to peer pressures of socialite statuses of people who are not kind. This movie is best because it addresses the health topic of bullying of the ‘cool kids’, which in the movie are bullies.  The movie makes the connection that someone should always stay true to who they are and that treating others with respect will always make you happier.

Learning Objective: Students will compare and contrast the main character in a popular film regarding the main character’s perspective at the beginning of the film to the changes in perspective at the end of the film.

Core Integration:

  • I would first tell my students that after the movie was over they would be writing a compare/contrast essay on the movie about how the main character felt at the beginning of the movie and how they felt at the end. I would also ask them to include a reflection within the essay about how the main characters feelings related to the people she surrounded herself with and how they treated her. I would advise my students to take notes while we watch the movie. Then afterward I would give the students the next class period to write an their essay. Compare&contract expections embed
