Sleep: Integrated Internet Sources for 2nd Grade

Topic: Improving sleep
Grade level: 2rd grade
Core Idea: Personal Health and Wellness

Internet Source for Students:

Sleep For Kids

Reason For Choosing This Site:

This website is a kids friendly environment that is both interactive and informative. It is built for kids to explore and to learn about why it is vital to have healthy sleeping patterns. The layout of the website is tailored towards kids, easily accessible and fun to navigate. As a teacher, I would do a day around this website, using it as a project. I would create a worksheet handout, or writing assignment connected to looking at this website. The worksheet would be a scavenger hunt, finding particular information and going to specific links that I would lay out. I would ask students to walk through the website in a particular form and record their findings on the worksheet handout. Another website that was similar was Kids Health, but this website isn’t as organized or as user friendly.
NHES Applicable (Standard 1): “Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.”
    • PHW1.5.3    “Explain why sleep and rest are important for proper growth and good health.”
    • PHW1.5.2    “Describe values that promote healthy behaviors.”
Healthy Behavior Outcomes Applicable:

    • HBO 2: “Practice appropriate hygiene habits.”
    • HBO 3: “Get an appropriate amount of sleep and rest.”
Core Integration:

For integration into the classroom, I would create a whole activity for this website with a worksheet, I could have a read aloud with a book about sleeping, something like “Goodnight moon”, or “Where Do I Sleep? : A Pacific Northwest Lullaby”. The worksheet would be a KWL sheet, or a map that would have word text boxes, these boxes would be used for writing in the information found on the website about sleep. I would have a section for “why”, “how”, and “when”.

I would find a book about animals that have different sleeping patterns, and talk about hibernation, discuss what other animals need. I would then bridge into what humans need (sleep) to survive and be healthy. I found a book called “Where Do I Sleep? : A Pacific Northwest Lullaby” which shows animals in their different habitats, while sleeping.
For integration into another subject, if I was doing a unit on animals, or nocturnal animals, I would integrate sleeping patterns into this unit. For example, as you are discussing and researching which types of animals are nocturnal, you could then dive into how humans need sleep. This would start the discussion about healthy habits and how important sleep is.

Standard for Science: 3-LS1-1 “Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles but all have in common birth, growth, reproduction, and death.” (This was the only standard for NGSS that I could find that had anything to do with cycles, can be related to sleep).

Internet Source for Teachers:

Since this website is easily accessible it will be a very helpful link for teachers to visit so they can learn more. You could send out a newsletter to schools directed towards teachers so they can see the website and what the website is about.
