Internet Addiction and Me

 

  • Description and Reason for Choosing:

 

    • This film is about a teenage boy named Eoin and his decision to give up the Internet for a month to see if he was as addicted to the Internet as he thought he was. Three of his friends also went without the Internet for a week to assess their own addictions. Throughout the documentary, the filmmaker and his friends share their realizations and struggles. At the beginning of the film, they were unsure if they were addicted to the Internet, but at the end of the film they all agreed that they were somewhat addicted to the Internet. I think this is the best documentary film selection to share with students because they will be able to relate to the filmmaker and his friends, and I will encourage students to go Internet free for some period of time.

 

 

  • Review of Content Covered:

 

    • This film addresses multiple topics surrounding Internet addiction, including the mental, social, physical, and emotional effects of trying to combat the addiction. Throughout the film, the teens take time to reflect on their experiences and share how their lives are different without the Internet. The filmmaker also talks with his parents and they agree that his interactions with his family improved during his time away from the Internet. In their reflections, the teens also talk about the benefits of the Internet, including the information available for school projects. I believe this film provides a well-rounded view of the benefits and disadvantages of having access to the Internet, as well as the prevalence of Internet addiction.

  • Core Integration:
  • I plan to integrate this documentary into my class by showing my class this film before having them take time away from the Internet. I would have my students go a week without using the Internet, and then complete a project documenting their experience. If my school had video cameras that my students were able to check out, then they could choose to create a short film like Eion Corbett. If not, I would have students write a reflective essay about their experience, including how this experience will shape their future Internet usage.

    • This film is about a teenage girl named Taylor who joins a social media website after she gets a laptop for her birthday. Through this social media website, Taylor becomes a victim of cyberbullying. I believe that this is the best popular film for young teenagers to learn about the dangers of social media and the internet in general because it highlights the effects that it had on one teenager and everyone around her. It is important that students understand how social media can affect someone’s family and friends, and I believe that this film illustrates that point well.

 

 

  • Review of Content Covered:

 

    • This film covers some of the negative aspects of the internet that students need to be aware of, primarily cyberbullying. In addition to cyberbullying, this film also addresses the fact that the internet allows people to disguise their identity and that the internet can harm a person’s interpersonal relationships. I will integrate this popular film into my teaching by having students write reviews on the film after watching it, critique another student’s review of the film, and have students revise their reviews based on the critiques that they received.

      • NHES 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
        • PHW1.8.13 Describe how an inactive lifestyle contributes to chronic disease. (HBO 7 & 8)

    • I plan to integrate this popular film by showing the video after a discussion about internet addiction and following the video with an English Language Arts writing assignment based on the film. For this writing assignment, I will have each student write a review of the movie. My students’ reviews will need to meet certain requirements, such as introducing their opinion, supporting their opinion with reasoning, maintaining a formal writing style, and providing a logical conclusion. After students finished writing their reviews of the film, students would exchange their typed, unnamed reviews. My students would then practice critique the claims and reasoning of others by going through an anonymous classmate’s review to decide where they need to provide more reasoning for their claim. Students’ reviews will then be returned to them and they will edit their review based on the critiques that they received from their classmate.

    • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.1: Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
    • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.5: With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate command of Language standards 1-3 up to and including grade 8 here.).
