Grade 3-5 Integrated Internet Sources for Students

Site name: The Adventures of Ana and Phyl Axis: the Carnival E-Book

Parent site: Get Schooled in Anaphylaxis

  • Reason for Choosing This Site:

      • I chose this site as the best website for students to learn about food allergies from, that hadn’t already been used, because it is informational and fun to read. The information provided in the book as well as the context of the story would be easy to integrate into other curriculum areas such as literacy, math, and science. The book also could be used to provoke discussion about important social dynamics such as bullying and inclusion.  This e-book could be introduced in a variety of ways ranging from individual reading to group story time.

  • Core Integration:

      • I would create mathematics story problems based of the carnival preparation that Ana, Phyl, and their classmates did. I could write problems for most all of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics including, 3.OA.A.1 through 3.OA.A.4, 3.OA.B.5 through 3.OA.B.6, 3.OA.C.7, 3.OA.D.8 through 3.OA.D.9, and 3.NF.A.1 through 3.NF.A.3. (Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, pg. 22-26)
        • Example problem: Ana had 8/13 of a roll of allergen free streamers and Phyl has 6/7 of a roll of the same allergen free streamers. Who has more streamers?
      • I would integrate this resource into a science lesson about inheritance and variation of traits. Students could look at allergies alongside physical features such as hair and eye color. This aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards 3-LS3-1, 3-LS3-2, and 3-LS4-2. (Next Generation Science Standards for Inheritance and Variation of Traits)
      • I would use this book in a lesson about inclusion. I would use George’s actions to start a discussion about bullying.

  • Internet Source for Teachers: Informative and Reliable

Site Name: Food Allergy Research and Education

Reason for Choosing This Site:

This site was chosen because it lays out food allergy information that is geared towards school teachers and administrators. Having good food allergy information that is well laid out and relevant to professional educators is important because 1 in 13 students has a food allergy. That is about 2 students per classroom.

Core Integration:

As a PE and Health teacher food allergies can be integrated into the curriculum fairly easy and should be. It is important as professional educators to be educated on what food allergies are and to then educate our peers and our students on food allergies. A great way to educate other teachers and students about food allergies could be through a poster. The poster could include the most common food allergies or common food allergic reaction symptoms.

  4. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
