Findings/Results

When identifying the subject of the photo in each news source, those subjects ended up falling into four different categories. Brett Kavanaugh was the subject in three out of the ten photos, and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford was also the subject in three out of ten. Two photos were of protestors rallying in Washington D.C. to oppose Kavanaugh’s confirmation, and the last two photographs fell into the category of “other”. These photos were of Dr. Fords name tag on the desk in the empty senate hearing room and also a wider angle view of the same room during the hearing.

The results for the camera angle of the photographs largely leaned toward one specific angle. Photos from eight out of the ten sources analyzed were shot at eye level/a straight-on angle. None were shot from above, and only two were shot from below.

Camera distance was the third characteristic of visual framing that was analyzed. It ended up being somewhat evenly divided, with four of the ten sources being shot close up to the subject and four out of ten also being shot at a medium distance from the subject. Only two out of the ten photos analyzed were shot from a long distance.

Shot focus was the final characteristic analyzed. It was almost evenly divided, with six out of the ten photos having just the subject in focus, and the remaining four out of ten having other aspects of the photo in focus as well.
