April 17 – May 31, 2023

FI 2nd floor – 202 Exhibition Space

This show is a collaborative effort of both the ART 370 Black and White Photography 1 class and the ART 373 Alternative Photography Process class. The results are a collection of both black and white prints and dark blue cyanotype prints, thus the title Black and Blue!

  • In dark blue cyanotype, women pose atop one another all looking at the viewer
  • Black and White Photography: On the left is an image of a man with long hair posing barefoot with a longbow and a paintbrush, surrounded by lite-up computer screens and en-robed in a white cloth. HE looks forward towards the viewer. On the right is an image of a woman in a leafy headdress, a necklace of large beads, and a dress with flower-like decals. She poses with a ukulele decorated by flowers, her hands poised to play. She looks off to the side.
  • In cyanotype, a person lays on the ground toughing the top of their head and their earlobe, they look at the camera
  • Two women stand back to back with one in a white dress facing the camera showing her face covered in an opaque flower and the other women dressed in black facing away from the camera. They both hold bouquets of flowers, and the women in the black dress whose face would be reflected in a mirror is obscured in the reflection by the flowers at her waist in her hands
  • In dark blue cyanotype, an abstract collage piece with a shadowed out figure's shoulder and a streak of piano keys across the page. The paper has been purposely crumbled then re-flattened
  • Two figures pose in advanced proximity heat protecting suits, which are full-body covering, are a reflective silver and have rectangular tinted face guards. One figure stands upright and the other is leaning over as if looking at something on the ground
  • In dark blue cyanotype, collage piece, an alien planet filled with giant mushrooms, a tall cactus and overhead an upside-down field of sunflowers. The edges of the paper are purposely frayed
  • Two women look at the camera, both are wearing dark dresses. They have stacked multiple ayers of sunglasses over their face to the point of obscurity and on top of their heads are clothes. The woman on the right beaks through a gap in their shield of sunglasses.

Inspired by Claude Cahun’s famous quote “Under this mask, another mask. I will never finish removing all these faces” (Claude Cahun 1930), ART 370 students worked as groups to make masked portraits where they were encouraged to use props, set design, and performance to explore the prompt above.

The ART 373 students were encouraged to use a digital negative to create abstract or representational images. They printed with cyanotype on multiple different materials, ranging from a paper bag, a t-shirt and even a wooden cutting board.

The result of these processes for both classes has resulted in a beautiful show that you could see on the Fine Art’s building second floor in the exhibition space near room 202. The works will be up from April 17th to May 31, 2023.
