Ivan Albright

Last summer while I was in Chicago I saw these paintings by Ivan Albright. They are huge and incredibly meticulous! Honestly these pictures really don’t do them justice. I would suggest looking him up on Art Stor to zoom in on his amazing detailing.

These particular ones were commissioned by Albert Lewin for his film adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray

I am an artist from Chicago and grew up seeing Ivan Albright’s work. One of his great paintings hung over the bar at Ricardo’s Restaurant. I remember reading an article in the Tribune how the painting disappeared during the sale of the restaurant never to be seen again. Also the story goes that Ivan Albright lived above Ricardo’s and paid his rent with the painting.
Franz Schults became well know for a book he did on Ivan Albright. This led to his work as an art critique for a Chicago paper. Franz never did much good for Chicago artist after that.
