Of Mother Nature and Marlboro Men Reading

I thought that the idea of using images to turn nature into a commodity was very interesting- sell an image, sell a trip, and hence sell nature- as was the idea that people view landscape photography with preconceived notions in regards to the political interpretations of the subject matter, such how images involving the pillaging of the earth via oil mines became popular during the environmental movement, regardless of the artists political intentions or technical aptitude.

I also liked the idea that “personal choices (in regards to landscape photography) reflect collective interests and influences- landscape photography is not staged.  What the artist has to pick and choose from when contemplating an image is dependent on what those who live in a certain area make an effort to build, preserve, or destroy, and the resulting subject matter within the picture is not solely dependent on the photographers conscious effort to take a picture, but is also  indirectly linked to what the inhabitants choose to make of their surroundings. Lewenz’s  idea to use a calendar in order to make her images available to to the middle class, for which they were relevant, was especially interesting.
