When I read this chapter I was very interested to discover that the “camera obscura” was used long before photography was ever invented- the idea of nomads poking holes in their tents to keep watch for bandits in juxtaposition with how far modern day photography has come was humbling. I also thought that the drama between Niepce and Daguerre was fascinating and the descriptions in the book in terms of their chemical processes made me wonder how many potential “inventors of photography” accidentally became inventors of large grenades. The information on how to construct a pinhole was very helpful, especially the formulas for how to determine your exposure time based on the size of your pinhole and your focal length.
