This week the Summer Documentary students at MISC have been burning the candle at both ends- staying up late to finish assignments and getting up early to finish conversations about social justice, organizing and fictional(?) ghosts. This week, I have had the chance to talk about student activism and organizing on college campuses with students from all across the country. I gained insight into the poor handling of the asks of the Black Student Union at Oberlin College, the way administration fumbled queer student needs at St. Olaf, and shared the ways in which Western’s Native American Student Union were successful in their asks and demands to the administration. Getting the chance to have in-depth conversations with students who are similar to me has been refreshing and empowering. My fellows are photojournalists, filmmakers, activists, organizers, radio junkies and outdoor enthusiasts. We have interviewed and profiled strangers in Astoria, Oregon, put together audio postcards, and shared our favorite pieces of media. Our summer together is just getting started, and the best is yet to come!
